NATTo Plantations

NATTo is unique, a brand that is founded on a passionate commitment to quality and authenticity in our oil, grown “As Nature Intended” to heal, protect and nourish.

The Naturally Australian Tea Tree Oil plantations were established in 1993 and are located within the lush borders of the Bungawalbin National Park in northern New South Wales, Australia. We first started growing tea tree oil in this unique area because it is where the original tea tree oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia has been grown for centuries in its natural habitat. Our 672-hectare property is considered to be one of the largest privately owned tea tree oil plantations in Australia.

Our tea tree oil is grown in rich alluvial soil, nestled within the confines of this natural habitat which beams with native wildlife. This is what gives our tea tree oil its purity and superior quality, seldom found in other oils. By cultivating, harvesting, and distilling our oil directly on the plantation, we have the unique capability to guarantee perfection at every step of the process.

This wonderful natural oil is grown amongst the best that Australian nature has to offer in a clean, green environment. There are no factories, no pollution, no hustle and bustle, just the sweet smell of the forest and tea trees. We keep our carbon footprint minimal and practice sustainable agriculture. We also protect the native animals that inhabit this distinct region, from the resident emus that live amongst the rows and rows of tea tree to the koalas that keep a watchful eye from the bordering native gum trees.

Oil Production

Melaleuca Alternifolia commonly known as tea tree oil, is steam distilled from the leaves, branches and stems.

Our oil is harvested annually from fully mature trees during the months of July to September. Our dual row purpose built harvesters cut the tea trees at ground level. Once cut, the completely shredded trees are transported to our distilling plant, where the process of steam is used to extract the essentials oils from the crop.

The steam releases the aromatic molecules from the plant because the steam forces open the pockets of oil inside the plant. The molecules of these exquisite oils then escape from the plant and evaporate into the steam. The steam now contains the essential oil and is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam. This forms a liquid from which the essential oil and water are then separated.

For thousands of years, Indigenous Australians have known the health benefits of tea tree oil using tea tree as an antiseptic for skin conditions. The leaves were crushed and applied as a paste to wounds and skin abrasions. Oils from the crushed leaves were also used to treat sore throats and coughs. Today, widely recognised as a genuine natural healer, tea tree oil is a powerful antiseptic, anti-viral and fungicidal substance. Safe for an enormous range of different cosmetic and medicinal uses, tea tree oil takes it pride of place amongst the wonderful world of essential oils and the many health benefits associated with it.

Distillation Process

Our skilfully harvested Melaleuca Alternifolia leaf is transported to our distillation plant right here on the plantation, where the process of dry steam distillation begins.

Locked inside airtight bins, dry steam is introduced and the operation begins. As the steam passes through the leaf and the temperature inside the bins rises the steam containing the precious oiis then passed through a condenser.

This mixture is then passed into a separation chamber to separate the oil from the water, resulting in NATTo’s premium quality pure tea tree oil.

Ever mindful of the environment, NATTo then uses the water residue from the distillation process throughout the plantation to water the next season’s crop. Once distillation is complete the waste matter from the plants is either recycled back onto the next crop of tea trees or sold as a premium grade mulch.

NATTo is committed to the use of sustainable and eco-friendly farming. Our agriculture, environmental and sustainability practices ensure we protect the land, while still providing the necessary resources to produce our 100% premium, unblended tea tree oil.
